What you do matters

Earlier this week, I had a great catch-up session with a friend of mine. As we were discussing our latest work ventures and family updates, she exclaimed, “Oh! I forgot to tell you, but you totally inspired me!” I was surprised to hear this and asked her to tell me more. She shared how she really loved hearing about my journey to learn to play ice hockey and decided to find her own athletic outlet through competitive swimming. She hadn’t swam competitively in over 15 years, but found a local league and started loving swimming again. She continued to tell me about the ripple effect her swimming had on the rest of her life. Once she was in the pool, she was able to calm her mind and think through problems. Her body responded well to the training and, through her meditative swimming sessions, she made some changes to her job, which eventually led to a major promotion and a happier home life (her son even started swimming too!). Just like a drop of water to a puddle, my self-care choice to learn to play ice hockey affected my personal and professional life, but it also extended to my surrounding sphere of influence. My heart was so full with hearing all these wonderful things falling into place for my friend and I couldn't help but think about the power of choices in business too. The entrepreneurial journey has many ups and downs, with days where I struggle with progress and, for what I perceive, as not reaching my goals fast enough. However, this story with my friend, reminded me that every thing we do matters. People around you, including the ones you don’t even know about yet, need you to build businesses and make choices in your professional life that will eventually change the world. On those hard days, remember ripple effects and to keep going – the future depends on it.
