Finding Purpose in Hospitality: Lessons from Thomas the Tank Engine

As a parent, I often found myself navigating the whimsical world of children’s TV shows. During my kids’ toddler years, one show that often played in our house was Thomas & Friends, which starred Thomas the Tank Engine. I have many thoughts on the quirky undertones of the show, but my kids loved it, so it became part of our routine.

A smiling blue cartoon train with a friendly face on the track, set against a clear sky and green hills, giving a joyful vibe.

One particular episode stands out to me, even now: Thomas, after making a mistake, cries out, “I’m not a useful engine anymore!” His heartbreak and self-doubt were palpable, and I couldn’t help but reflect on it. In the episode, Thomas goes through a journey of negative self-talk but ultimately finds his confidence again by tackling the challenges ahead. This simple storyline resonated with me because, at our core, don’t we all strive to feel useful and make a meaningful impact?

This idea of usefulness and impact keeps coming back to me as I think about the direction for Jane Hotel Group, especially at the beginning of the new year. When brainstorming projects and ideas for JHG, it’s not just about finding investments that are profitable; it’s about finding those that serve a greater purpose and are "useful."

What does it mean to be ‘useful’ in the world of hotel investments?

For us at JHG, it goes beyond financial returns. A ‘useful’ investment is one that creates value for everyone it touches. We aim to invest in projects that:

  • Positively Impact Local Communities: We want our investments to be more than just buildings; they should be hubs that uplift local economies, create jobs with livable wages, and foster connections. A useful investment supports the community it resides in, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

  • Embrace Innovation: Innovation doesn’t mean chasing the latest tech trends for the sake of it. It means finding creative solutions that enhance both the guest and employee experience, from sustainable practices to better operational efficiencies. For us, being useful means being forward-thinking, improving the status quo, and setting new standards in hospitality.

  • Support Meaningful Labor Practices: How an investment affects the people who work there is just as important as its impact on guests. We’re committed to supporting projects that prioritize fair wages and equitable working conditions because the heart of any hotel is its team members.

The lesson from Thomas is simple but powerful: Being useful isn’t about avoiding mistakes; it’s about finding ways to contribute, to build, and to make things better. At Jane Hotel Group, our mission is to do just that—empowering communities through thoughtful, innovative, and impactful hotel investments. Every project we take on is an opportunity to be ‘useful’ in a way that truly matters.
